Flying from Memphis to Maine then driving to Newbrunswick Canada to hunt black bear. What are the rules/regulations for transporting rifle that was bought from an freind and is not stolen.
You're goingto need a customs firearms transport ticket to get the rifle thru the Canadian border.
You should be able to fly with it okay. Just declare it when you check your bags and make sure it is in a secure, lockable gun case. By the way, Don't say, "I have a gun" at the airport. Say, I will be checking a firearm today.
same answer as boker youll need a transport ticket for it other than that you should be ok...good luck on the hunt
Only a few places in the US actually have "Registration" of firearms like rifles. There is no need to show or prove you are the owner through documentation. Check with the airline you are flying's website and find their rules for firearms. Know them, follow them and most importantly PRINT OUT THESE RULES and bring it with you!!!!!! Get to the airport plenty EARLY, smile and declare your locked firearm per the airline's rules. Expect the Ticket Agent to be a complete idiot about these rules and expect that they will call a supervisor, who may or may not know the rules themselves. I have had to wait over an hour in some cases dealing with four different people before we got cleared. This is why you go EARLY. Smile and do not show frustration or be a jerk or they will take all day. You will need some forms for the Canada crossing, sorry don't know those but looks like some here do.
You will have no problem in traveling on airlines with it inside the U.S. All you have to do is to have it in an approved lockable case with any ammo in a separate checked bag. When you get to the airport, you will have to take your rifle to the ticket counter of the airline that you are traveling on and tell them that you are checking a rifle. They will check to see that it is unloaded and then direct you to the ATSB security area to have them check it and lock the case. The problem, if any, will occur in crossing into Canada. Therefore, you will need to contact any Canadian Consulate to find out what they require. You will need to have all of the necessary papers in order BEFORE you arrive at the Canadian border. When you contact whatever Canadian authorities you have to contact to get the necessary papers, you can ask them what documentation you will need. Good hunting!!
if private party sales are legal in maine than it doesnt matter its your gun you bought it.
