My mom and I are planning to go on a vacation after my graduation and I've been researching on good and affordable travel destinations. I'm partial to Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, and Seoul. Any good recommendations. Also, i've been checking out travel packages online and they have these packages (that include accommodations and transportation and tours )that charge per pax (usually ranges from $200 - 400). Does this differ to travelling independently? Or is it advisable to just go with the travel package?
You can buy a Lonely Planet Thailand guidebook at Power Books or National Book Store for about P1000 to P1500 making it EASY to travel independently so Bangkok's hard to beat with all the historical cultural relics, temples and sightseeing. The Crocodile Farm, travel by boat up the rivers, go shopping in Chinatown and Khao San Road areas, street party nightlife past 7PM in Khao San Road, Thai cultural dancing theatre and if you have the time you can visit destinations outside BGK like Sukhothai, the ancient capital about 4+ hours north of Bangkok. The Khao San Palace Hotel is about U$25 ( 850 to 950 Baht ) and The Four Brothers Hotel is P500 to P700 and the Sawasdee Guest House Hotel ( maybe 10 locations all around BGK ) ranges from 500 to 900 Baht. In the back alleys there are even cheaper accommodations but not suitable for your Mom and you. If you plan well fly back and forth between Monday and Thursday for better chance at promo fares around P8700 to P11,000 MNL BGK Return . Its stunning Victoria Harbour view and The Peak have just been rated as Asia's No.1 skyline by a Japanese TV Station There're many nice places to stay in Hong Kong notably hotels located in Causeway Bay, Central District, Tsimshatsui District and in Mongkok District are all close to the hundreds of fascinating shoppings and restaurants. If you're looking for budget hotels, The cheapest hotel in Hong Kong is probably the Silvermine Bay Hotel situated in Silvermine Bay of the Lantau Island overlooking a beach, under US$50 per night. It is however not convenient to the downtown core where most of the shoppings, dinings and business activities are concentrated in. There's no road that connects from the Airport to Silvermine Bay, you'll have to ride on a 20 mins ferry from the Cenral Pier. If you're not in a rush, then it's quite a quiet and different place than the rest of the hustling bustling Hong Kong. Another economical options will be staying in hostels in the city centres. There're plenty of time located in Tsimshatsui,(eg inside the Chung King Mansion complex and the Kimberly Mansion complex), in Mongkok Districts, in Causeway Bay and Wanchai Districts. Hostels are around HK$120 - $200 per night depending whether private bathroom or shared. Simply google hostels in HK more their contacts. Hong Kong is renowned as the shopping and dining paradise. You can eat like a billionaires, in the same token there're many affordable places with unbelivable prices. For instance HK has the cheapest MacDonald's prices on earth. A Cantonese wonton noodle soup is only around HK$12 - 15 depending on location, a fried rice is around HK$20. A popular Chinese fast food chain all over the city, the De Coral Fast Food, with set meals under HK$30. Buying brand names is among the best buy in HK since there's zero sales tax nor import tariffs, most brand names are 10% - 50% cheaper than anywhere else in the world. Street vendors or flea markets is another interesting shopping paradise, they have all sorts of products selling at knockoff prices, eg the Ladies Street, the evening Temple Street vendors, Stanley Market, etc. Everywhere in Hong Kong is well connected by its efficient and timely public transportation system, the MTR (subway), big and mini buses. Cost is from under US$1 - $2 per ride. If you like exploring on your own, simply follow the map, people on the streets always happy to guide directions.
