In my experience the most frequently mentioned amongst friends and acquaintances are Jamaica, Hawaii and the Egyptian Pyramids. To clarify, I've never been anywhere of note so remain in ignorant bliss :)
I expected Statue of Liberty to be huge...........it's not.
Venice - it stinks and is ridiculously expensive. It's basically a cliché of itself.

I was very disappointed in Bruxelles, closely followed by Amsterdam. Both cities were dirty, the streets were covered in doggie doo, and the people, including those who were supposedly in the hospitality industry, were grumpy. I have been to both more than once and had the same experience, and thus have no intention to return to either anytime soon.
