Traveling on Amtrak from USA to Canada?

I'm traveling from Norfolk to Toronto in December and because the plane tickets have gone up almost 200$ excluding baggage fees since the last time I purchased plane tickets to Toronto, I've opened up to discover my options. I looked up the cost of taking Amtrak and it would significantly reduce the cost for traveling to my destination. I have a few questions though: I've read a bit into how the trip can be and so far the only bad comments I've heard about riding the Amtrak is that it tends to be late. How would this go for me? I'll be getting onto 3 different trains, one in the US, and then 2 in Canada. How about the customs/border situation? Is there like a border/customs area set up where when you get off a train you have to go through it, such as like you do when flying? If anyone had had the experience of traveling from the US to Canada on an Amtrak I would certainly appreciate it if you could give me a run down of the procedure. Thanks!

Did you read this friend did this and she said that the train stopped for about half hour and that nobody was allowed to get off the train. Agents boarded the train and did a quick inspection, then the train continued to Canada.

First, once you get to New York City, there is one train that goes straight to Toronto. You will not change trains in Canada. OK, the train is often late, but it's a pleasant, comfortable way to go, so don't be in a hurry and you'll be fine. Once you get to the border you have to stay on the train, and Canada Immigration Police will come on and check everyone's passport. You also will have to fill out a customs form, which a train employee will give you long before you get to the border. The form is easy to fill out, very straightforward. You just give it to the Customs Guys when they come around. The wait at the border can be long, but don't sweat it. If you expect speed on Amtrak, you'll be disappointed. Anyway, the Canadian Customs people may ask you a couple of questions, like where do you live and how long you're going to be in Canada sort of thing. Just answer the questions honestly...I think you know the routine. It's no sweat, really. Have fun in Toronto!

= Traveling on Amtrak from USA to Canada it is good and safe.
