What is an ideal age to take children traveling?

Like to far destinations via airplane such as Europe or resort in the Carribean etc. My kids are currently 4 and 2 months (I know the little one has a while yet before he can go anywhere). Do you think that if you take kids out younger they get used to it and therefore behave better or is it better to wait?

The younger the better, that way it's never really a 'new' thing for them. We just took a long flight with our 4 month old and he did better than the other two did on their first flights (13m, 6m), although the other two took the time change better than he has, if you're worried about that.

I took my daughter to Mexico at 4 months and Costa Rica at 2 years. 4 months was a little hard with the beach because she couldn't even sit up yet and there was sand everywhere! As far as the plane, it was easy. She was happy to be held the whole time at 4 months although I did have to put on the moby wrap and walk the aisle for a little while. There was a rough period on planes from about crawling to 18 months. They just want to move! Around 2 my daughter became good on planes again and can stay in her seat now. (although now we have to buy her one!) 5-6 months when they are sitting, yet not crawling is a good time in my opinion. They are happy to be along for the ride, but not helpless! It got fun again around 2 because she could really enjoy what we were doing. In between was a little rough.
