Two week road trip: Anybody have any tips?

The better half and I would like to do some exploring and see some of the many places we haven't seen in our lives. We'd both like to move out of Ohio, and figure this might be a good way to start figuring out where we might like to live. So we'd like to take a couple weeks and travel south through a few states. What I'm looking for is any tips about how to make a road trip like that worth it. Of course we'd need to keep spending to a minimum, and I'd love tips for that as well. Obviously we'll want to pack as much food as we can and/or go grocery shopping rather than going out to eat....but after that, I'm about clueless. Thanks for any tips.

I love driving around and have a coolbox (Called an Esky here in Oz) in the boot with frozen bottles of water, to keep the dairy products cool. When staying somewhere, I re-freeze the bottles of water as well as keeping the dairy products in the motel fridge. Shaved turkey and mayo, cheese, cranberry sauce, whatever else you enjoy in sandwiches, will keep energy levels up. Are there free, or cheap public barbeques in USA? In Australia, there are BBQs in public parks, and this is useful for cheap meals. I carry tin plates and cheap cutlery, and can eat cheaply. Dont forget the washing up stuff or you will end up using shampoo like I did once! Staying in cabins in caravan parks will save money. I like tenting, but that involves expenditure and you might not like it. Have a lovely time, whatever you do.

Checklist Is your car in good condition. Take some extra gas other than filling the tank. Fruits, food and water bottle. Clothes Some medication. Napkins Warm clothes. You never know. Cash GPS or a good map Good luck
